Books by and about George Eastman House
Camera: A History of Photography from Daguerrotype to Digital

by Todd Gustavson

$45.00
Cameras, and what they capture, forever changed our perception of the world, and of ourselves. Few inventions have had the impact of this ingenious, elegant, and deceptively simple device. This gorgeous cornerstone volume, created in collaboration with the world-famous George Eastman House, celebrates the camera and the art of the photograph. It spans almost two hundred years of progress, from the first faint image ever caught to the instantaneous pictures snapped by today’s state-of-the-art digital equipment. The informative narrative by Todd Gustavson traces the camera’s development, the lives of its brilliant but often eccentric inventors, and the artists behind the lens. Images and highly descriptive captions for more than 350 cameras from the George Eastman House Collection, plus more than 100 historic photos, ads, and drawings, complement the text. A foreword by George Eastman House Director Anthony Bannon, and insightful essays by Steve Sasson, inventor of the digital camera, and Alexis Gerard, visionary founder and president of Future Image Inc., completes this illuminating study of one of the greatest modern technological achievements.

Todd Gustavson is Curator of Technology at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. He is responsible for the cataloging, storage, and maintenance of one of the world’s largest collections of photographic and cinematic equipment, containing more than 20,000 artifacts. He has curated or co-curated ten exhibitions for the museum, including the critically acclaimed traveling exhibition The Brownie at 100.

Imagining Paradise: The Richard and Ronay Menschel Library at The George Eastman House, Rochester

by Manfred Heiting, Rachel Stuhlman, and Sheila Foster

$84.95
Imagining Paradise is the first book to showcase the treasures of The George Eastman House's incomparable Richard and Ronay Menschel Library. It features over 250 rare books, each beautifully illustrated here and accompanied by commentary from prominent scholars. A large and handsome volume itself, as befits its subject, it ranges over the history of the medium of photography, its practitioners and its processes - from bucolic landscapes, to travel and exploration, science and medicine, the literary and the illustrious. It documents works illustrated with tipped-in original salt prints, albumen prints, platinum prints, photogravures, carbon prints, collotypes and Woodburytypes.

No other library in the world holds this breadth and depth of the history, aesthetics and technology of photography and no other book can bring them so thoroughly into the reader's hands. This exceptional collection of rare books was formed from the Eastman Historical Photographic Collection of the Kodak Company, which encompassed the collections of many of the most important photographic scientists, historians and collectors in the world.

Spot the Differences

by George Eastman House

$7.95
What makes this book of "spot the differences" puzzles so unique? Simply put: the quality of the photographs. Every one of the pictures comes from the acclaimed George Eastman House archive, with some dating back to the 1800s. So they make stunning art as well as absorbing brainteasers. In every case, you'll get two versions of the picture side by side; they'll look almost alike, but one is slightly different from the other. It's up to you to search the images and find the variations. The puzzles come in three levels of difficulty: easy with five differences, medium with six, and hard with seven. The photos encompass historical figures, famous buildings, stunning landscapes, and engaging animals and many are iconic works by renowned photographers. The most famous include "The Migrant Mother" by Dorothea Lange; Lewis W. Hine's "Power House Mechanic" and the amazing portrait of Abraham Lincoln taken by the celebrated Civil War photographer Matthew Brady.
Steve McCurry

by Anthony Bannon

$24.95
Born in Philadelphia, Steve McCurry studied history and cinematography at Pennsylvania State University before working as a freelance photographer in India. He is best known for his evocative colour photography, which has captured stories of human experience that, in the finest documentary tradition, cross boundaries of language and culture. His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion to take the first pictures of the conflict. Since then many of McCurry’s images have become modern icons. A high point of his career was the rediscovery of an unidentified Afghan refugee girl, which many have described as the most recognizable photograph in the world today. His coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise.

This monograph on McCurry follows a chronological order, identifying major themes and examining key works; a beautifully produced, affordable introduction to one of the leading figures in photography today.

50 Photographs

by Jessica Lange

$60.00

“I find photography a most mysterious process—capturing that moment in time and space, elusive and fleeting, and crystallizing it. You have made a photograph. It is its own thing now. To me, that is thrilling.” —Jessica Lange

Actress Jessica Lange’s career spans more than 30 years and 30 films; the winner of two Academy awards, the one-time waitress is one of the most acclaimed performers of both the screen and the stage, as well as one of the most recognizable faces. 50 Photographs, however, finds Lange on the other side of the camera.

Originally drawn to the medium simply as a way to document the lives and growth of her children, Lange has now been photographing on and off for 15 years, approaching the art as an antidote to the constant fervor of Hollywood. “It is a way of working,” she says of her process, “that is the opposite of acting. Photography doesn’t depend on collaboration; it can be solitary and private.” A 2007 feature in Aperture, introduced by Mary Ellen Mark, gave the world its first taste of Lange’s visual work; now, 50 Photographs gathers her impressive portfolio, featuring images from Mexico, Africa, Romania, Russia, Finland, Italy, and France as well as the U.S., into her first-ever photography monograph. Alternately comforting and disquieting, Lange’s striking black-and-whites possess a kind of moody mystery that is appropriately cinematic.

Three Acts

by John Divola

$50.00
Signed by the author.

In 1973, artist John Divola began the first of three highly ambitious and original bodies of work that together form this publication. The Vandalism series comprises black-and-white photographs of interiors of abandoned houses. Entering illegally, Divola spray painted expressive markings in the forms of dots, lines, and grids, creating a series of conceptual gestures that referenced “action painting” as readily as the graffiti that was fast becoming a cultural phenomenon. The following year, Divola began the Los Angeles International Airport Noise Abatement series, photographing a condemned neighborhood bought out by the airport to serve as a noise buffer for new runways. Unlike the Vandalism series, where the artist’s own intervention was at the crux of the project, here he focused his obsessive eye on unsanctioned entries by vandals who had absconded long ago. An extensive catalog of break-ins, the photographs record the evidence of violent entries: shattered windows, doors torn from hinges, a crowbar resting in the jamb of a door pried open. The final installment in this book, the Zuma series, is the artist’s documentation of the destruction of an abandoned beachfront property. While employing similar strategies of painting and intervention, the Zuma images add variation and complexity to Divola’s established themes as they incorporate color, elements of nature, and meditation on change. These cyclical images skillfully juxtapose romantic skies and sunsets with a seaside structure that, frame by frame, deteriorates into ruin as it is vandalized by the artist and others who eventually set it on fire.

Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda

by Douglas Menuez

$35.00
Signed by the author.

This intimate book of photographs follows the inspiring journey of twenty orphans who overcame tremendous hardships to form a dance troupe and become cultural ambassadors for their troubled country. They have brought their intense energy and joy to audiences across the U.S. over the past ten years, which has resulted in their support of more than 700 orphans in Uganda. Rising from the extreme poverty and devastation wrought by AIDS and civil war in Uganda to receive standing ovations while touring the best theaters in the U.S., these exceptional children bring good news from Africa.

In the Name of the Father, the Daughter, and the Holy Spirits: Remembering Roberto Rossellini

by Isabella Rossellini

$34.95

Signed by the author.

Roberto Rossellini, famous Italian film director and icon of neorealism, would have been one hundred years old on May 8, 2006. Isabella Rossellini, daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, and herself a film star, bestselling author and celebrated photo model, has created two very special homages to her father on the centenary of his birth: a short film entitled My Dad is 100 Years Old, directed by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin as director—and this many-voiced, richly illustrated book of remembrance. In the Name of the Father, the Daughter and the Holy Spirits, Remembering Roberto Rossellini, features texts and illustrations by Isabella Rossellini; entries by Ingrid Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, François Truffaut, Eric Rohmer and Guy Maddin; and numerous film stills and photographs by Herbert List, Clifford Coffin, Gordon Parks, David Seymour, and many others.

Our Culture Is Our Resistance: Repression, Refuge, and Healing in Guatemala

by Jonathan Moller

$45.00
Signed by the author.

For the past ten years Jonathan Moller has photographed communities uprooted by war in Guatemala. The result is Our Culture Is Our Resistance, a collection of portraits taken during that decade, revealing stories of life and death, of hope and despair, and of struggles for survival, respect, and truth. The beauty and strength of Moller's photographs and the accompanying texts not only document and preserve the faces and events associated with this land and its history, but also display for the viewer the humanity and dignity of these largely Mayan indigenous peoples. Featuring one hundred forty-seven tritone portraits, Our Culture Is Our Resistance also includes a preface by Guatemalan Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum; short essays by Ricardo Falla, Francisco Goldman, and Susanne Jonas; and prose and poetry by Humberto Ak'abal, Heather Dean, Julia Esquivel, Eduardo Galeano, Francisco Morales Santos. In addition, the book includes testimonies and reflections by Guatemalan community members and survivors, as well as statements by Eduardo Galeano, photographer Sebastião Salgado, and William F. Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA.

Goings on About Town

by Sylvia Plachy

$29.95
Signed by the author.

For a little over a year, and conceived as part of The New Yorker’s redesign of its front section in 2005, Sylvia Plachy was the first photographer ever to be assigned to shoot the opening photograph of the essential Goings On About Town section of the legendary magazine.

From the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island to Forest Park in Queens, and from backstage to center stage, in Goings On About Town, Plachy explores the city’s dynamics from the inside out, revealing the vital and at times wacky creativity that energizes New York around the clock. In doing so, she presents hidden gems that we might otherwise never get to see up close, such as Macy’s workshop in New Jersey for the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Plachy’s particular humor and way of looking feels particularly suited to these assignments. Almost entirely in color, this volume also includes some images that have never been published. Joyful and idiosyncratic, Goings On About Town is quintessentially Sylvia Plachy, and quintessentially New York.

Broken Empire: After the Fall of the USSR

by Gerd Ludwig

Each copy was personally signed by Ludwig himself during a recent visit to George Eastman House.
